Friends of the Malden Public Library to host Wine Tasting Gala fundraiser

The Friends of the Malden Public Library (MPL) will be hosting the Wine Tasting Gala fundraiser for the third year in a row (post-pandemic) on the evening of May 15. From 125 guests in 2024 to 190 last year, the Friends expect an even larger turn out this year. The historic Converse Memorial Building and Art Galleries in Malden will serve again as an exquisite backdrop while Malden’s most elegant citizens and friends savor a variety of fine wines and cuisine from Malden’s best establishments. The Silent Raffle, which was a hugely popular last year, will be expanded to offer new treats to delight our patrons. A VIP early entry at 6:30 p.m. will indulge guests to a tour of the world-class art galleries.

The Friends’ Wine Tasting Gala has always been one of Malden’s most popular events. First held in 2002, it sold out annually until the pandemic interrupted all in-person gatherings. In 2024, the Friends partnered with Kappy’s Fine Wine and Spirits (Rte. 1 in Malden), which has proven to be a first-rate partnership. Kappy’s provides their best wine vendors, each with an exquisite choice of wines.

“The sensory experience of tasting wines in an exclusive setting like an H.H. Richardson building from the 1880’s and surrounded by a world-class art collection is complete,” asserts Friends of the MPL Board of Directors member Mary Ellen O’Meara.

The theme for this year’s event will be Spring Blooms. “2025 was a tough year for Libraries in general, and particularly here in Malden for those who love our Library,” explains O’Meara. “The Friends wanted to create a light and airy theme to help us turn the page in this chapter and move on to brighter times.” The Converse Memorial Building will invite guests to enjoy spring and what it symbolizes: a natural reset after the dark winter months to vibrant life, optimism and new possibilities. The Gala theme will encourage guests to dress in florals and lighter materials, soft colors like pastels, that reflect the season’s vibe and combine sophistication and seasonal freshness.

The Friends of the MPL is a nonprofit, volunteer, fundraising organization, holding events for our diverse community to benefit the MPL throughout the year.
