Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Mayor Carlo DeMaria and The Council on Aging have planned two movie events in February at the Connolly Center located at 90 Chelsea St. in celebration of Black History Month.

On Thursday, February 2, 2023: our feature presentation is the movie “Marshall” starring Chadwick Boseman as Thurgood Marshall. In 1940, Thurgood Marshall is a young lawyer for the NAACP who crisscrosses the country defending innocent African-Americans from unjust indictments in court. A true story drama, Thurgood Marshall was the Supreme Court’s first African American Justice.

On Thursday, February 23, 2023: our feature presentation is the movie “Bessie” starring Queen Latifah as the legendary American Blues singer Bessie Smith. As a young singer from Chattanooga, Tennessee, Bessie and her sibling were left orphaned leaving their abusive older sister to raise them. To help support the family, Bessie worked in Vaudeville shows. She pushed her way into the business and finally got a record deal. Eventually, her success dries up only to lead to a comeback.

Showtime for each movie is at 1pm. Refreshments will be served free of charge. For additional information, please call Constituent Services at 311 or 617-394-2270.
