Ward 8 Councillor Jadeane Sica, in partnership with Mayor Gary Christenson’s Office, will be conducting a citywide Clothing Drive as part of the city’s celebration of Earth Day. The event will be on Saturday, April 23 from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. at the Linden School parking lot. Proceeds that come from the textiles collected go directly to the Malden Public Schools. Drive up and a member of the City of Malden’s textile recycling vendor, Helpsy, will be on hand to take your donations. They will be collecting clean, bagged and odor-free clothing and textiles:
- Clothing and accessories
- Footwear and outerwear
- Linens, blankets and quilts
- Stuffed toys
- Handbags, canvas bags, etc.
- Tablecloths and placemats
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, more than 84 percent of old clothes, shoes, belts, handbags and miscellaneous textile items end up in a landfill or an incinerator. On average, that works out to about 85 pounds of such items per person each year. As a result, textiles make up more than six percent of all the residential and municipal trash in the United States.
