Malden Boys Volleyball looks to get back on track; perfect start for Tornado Boys Tennis (3-0)
By Steve Freker
Congratulations are in order for Malden High Boys Lacrosse Head Coach Jonathan Copithorne and the Golden Tornado Laxmen on their first win of the season, 4-3 over Revere at Pine Banks Park on Thursday, April 16. The victory made FIVE WINS in a 24-hour span for Tornado Athletics, adding in wins for Boys Tennis, Girls Tennis, Girls Softball and Boys Volleyball on April 15.
Malden was led by Senior Captain Dante Bell and sophomore attack man Chance Path, each of whom scored two goals in the victory over Somerville. Path has been on fire this season, scoring nine goals in the Tornados’ first four games to date.
Malden dropped a game to Greater Boston League leader Medford (5-2 overall) on Tuesday to go to 1-5 overall, and was scheduled to play on the road at Lynn Classical yesterday (after Advocate press time). Coach Copithorne’s Tornados then have a busy, three-game week ahead, all on the road and all non-league: at Lowell Monday, April 27 (5:00 p.m.); at Northeast Vocational (Wakefield) on Wednesday, April 29 (4:30 p.m.); and at Gloucester Friday, May 1 (4:30 p.m.).
Seeley pitches and hits Malden Softball to 16-2 win over Somerville
Tornado senior captain Hayley Seeley pitched and batted Malden Varsity Softball to a first win of the season, a 16-2 victory on the road over Somerville at Trum Field on April 15. Seeley hurled a 1-hitter and also clubbed a home run to spark the offense in a big day for Malden. The victory rose Head Coach Rebecca Krigman’s team to 1-4 overall for the season heading into today’s non-league matchup on the road at Waltham High, which had a 10:00 a.m. start.
Two other scheduled games this school vacation break were cancelled and due to be rescheduled to wet grounds: Friday, April 17 home game versus non-league Cambridge Rindge and Latin and Monday’s road trip to Lynn English. Malden Softball stays busy next week with home games versus Revere (Monday, April 27) and Everett (Wednesday, April 28) and the makeup game at Lynn English on Thursday, April 30. All three games are 4:00 p.m. starts.
Boys Volleyball looks to get back on track
Malden High Boys Volleyball was looking to get back on track after a 3-1 home loss on April 17 to non-leaguer Arlington that put the season mark to 5-3 overall. Malden had an up-and-down week overall, getting swept on the road, 3-0, at Revere on April 13, then returning to do the same to Medford, 3-0, ending an arduous, seven-game road streak.
Malden is now at home for two full weeks, beginning with Wednesday’s hosting of Everett (after Advocate press time). Next week, Malden stays in the Greater Boston League with home games against Somerville on Monday, April 27 and Chelsea on Wednesday, April 29. Both are 5:15 p.m. starts.
Tornado Boys Tennis starts out perfect (3-0)
First-year Head Coach John Frigo’s Varsity Boys Tennis Team is off to a perfect start — literally! Not only is Malden unbeaten at 3-0, but the Tornados have won every set of every match to date: 5-0 over Lynn English on April 13, 5-0 over Everett on the road on April 15 and another 5-0 sweep on the road at Revere on Tuesday, April 21 this week.
Malden was scheduled to play on the road at Lynn Classical Wednesday this week (after Advocate press time), then plays three matches next week: hosting Medford at Amerige Park, Malden, on Monday, April 27; at Lynn English Wednesday, April 29; and then hosting Everett on Friday, May 1. All matches are at 4:00 p.m.
Malden Girls Tennis is all even at 2-2
Malden Girls Tennis is at 2-2 to start the season with a 5-0 loss to Lynn English on the road to start the season, then a pair of 5-0 sweeps over Everett and Revere to go to 2-1 Greater Boston League, with a 5-0 loss to non-leaguer Cambridge Rindge and Latin in between. Malden was scheduled to play on the road at Tufts University against Somerville today at 10:00 a.m., after hosting another GBL game Wednesday this week against Lynn Classical (after Advocate press time).
