Revere girls’ soccer team finishes solid regular season, eyes postseason run

Revere girls’ soccer finished 16-1-1, losing its first match of the season in its final regular season match. That 2-0 loss to Somerville was for the Greater Boston League title.

“It was an unbelievable game,” Revere coach Megan O’Donnell said. “Nisrin Sekkat played her best game of the season and Somerville got lucky and scored two goals in the last 15 minutes. We played our hearts out but came up short.”

Kaylin Oliva had the best game of her career, the coach said, challenging Somerville for every ball. The Revere Patriots had great ball movement from Erika Mejia, Jessica Mova, Samarah Paiva and Ari Pina. Sandra Torres, Catalina Chizavo, Nataly Oliva and Giselle Salvador all played their hearts out.

“Bench players played a huge role in the game by cheering and encouraging their teams the whole game,” O’Donnell said. “Our team wouldn’t be where we are today without the help of Coach Ariana Rivera. Coach Rivera is a true leader for these girls; she pushes them to their limits and is always there to listen and help the girls in any situation. Coach Rivera is going to do big things with the girls basketball team this winter.”

The junior varsity team tied, 4-4, with Somerville and had their best season in a long time.

“Coach Andrea Kelly and Jerry did a fantastic job with the girls this season,” O’Donnell said. “I am proud of how we did this season, and I am sad the girls couldn’t pull out the GBL title but honestly the growth and success of our program from last year has been phenomenal. Our eight seniors have showed true leadership and commitment to this program [so] I am definitely going to miss this senior class. I am so proud of this team in everything it has accomplished this season, and I am hoping we can make a statement in this year’s tournament. I tell the girls work hard, play hard, but at the end of the day what lesson did you learn from today’s game?”

Revere drew the No. 41 seed in the 44-team Division 3 state bracket and will play St. Mary’s of Lynn (No. 24 seed, 10-6-2) at a time and place TBD.

Revere/Malden golf team wraps up historic season

The GBL Open took place on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Kelley Greens in Nahant. Four Revere/Malden players were chosen as representatives in the 18-hole Stableford event. In a Stableford format, players are awarded one point for a double bogey, two for a bogey, four for a par, six for a birdie and eight for an eagle. Revere/Malden representatives were Frankie Annunziata, Jonathan Wells and Matt LaCroix of Revere and Chris MacDonald of Malden.

The team finished in third place with a total of 108 points behind Lynn English with 121 and Somerville with 137. Individually, MacDonald was the runner-up in the event with 39 points. Revere/Malden won the GBL regular season dual-match season for the first time in decades.

“The coaching staff could not be any prouder of our team’s maturation and improvement throughout the season,” Revere/Malden coach Brandon Pezzuto said. “Though our physical game has improved immensely this year, I am most proud of the transformation to our mental approach to the game. We started as a group simply looking to hit the ball as far as possible, and we concluded the season as a team that has a newfound focus and appreciation toward managing the game, taking advantage of what the course gives you and managing misses. We are certainly more deliberate in our decisions on the golf course on how to approach each aspect of the game. A truly wonderful season and a pivotal step forward for our program.”

Revere boys’ soccer team draws West Springfield in tourney

Revere, the No. 19 seed in the Division 2 state tourney, will play No. 14 West Springfield (11-3-4) in the opening around at a time and place TBD.

The Patriots finished the season 9-3-3 overall and 8-3-3 in the GBL. That was good enough for third place behind champion Somerville and second-place Medford. Revere got some great offensive contributions down the stretch of the regular season from Nicolas Morgira, Brayan Medina, Latrell Ashby, Francisco Navarette and JP Chavarria.

Revere field hockey team finishes regular season with competitive matches

Revere field hockey beat Everett, 4-2. Isabella Mendieta scored all four goals with an assist from Gemma Stamatopoulos.

“The team did an incredible job of working together and communicating in order to earn this win,” Revere coach Alex Butler said. “Hadia Bellemsieh and Jordan Martelli did a great job of shutting down Everett’s offense in the center of the field. Ana Kalliavas and Bella Stamatopoulos worked together to bring the ball wide in order to send it up to our offense to score. We could not have been prouder of our team’s effort during this game.”

Revere lost to Peabody, 2-0. Danni Randall played hard all four quarters on offense and did a great job of bringing the ball up field, her coach said. The team came close to scoring on a few offensive corners.

Revere lost to Ursuline Academy, 1-0. Genevieve Zierten hustled hard as a midfielder and offensive player, and she adapted no matter what position she was in, the coach said.

“Our goalie Sonia Haily had some of her best saves this season, with the help of defender Angelina Montoya Araque,” Butler said. “We fought hard throughout all four quarters, but ultimately came up short.”

Revere volleyball team wraps up showing growth

Revere volleyball finished the season 2-18. “This season was definitely a growing season, as we started with just two returning varsity players and no seniors,” Revere coach Emilie Hostetter said. “While the outcome may not be what we hoped for, I am proud of all the hard work these girls have put in and the growth they have made. I am confident that they will continue to work hard to improve in the offseason and come back stronger next year.”

Revere girls’ cross-country team nets second place at GBL meet

The Patriots finished second in the league at the GBL meet. “I am so proud of them; nearly everyone ran their fastest paces of the season,” Revere coach Katie Sinnott said. “Five runners earned personal best paces – Rocio Gonzalez Castillo, Afnane Amine, Hiba El Bzyouy, Daniela Santana Baez, and Anahis Vasquez all ran their fastest paces ever.”

Gonzalez Castillo led the team by finishing second overall and finishing under 20 minutes, which was her goal. Both she and Olivia Rupp earned GBL All-Star status by finishing in the top 10, and Amine missed earning an all-star medal by a mere four seconds.

“The results across the board were fantastic, and the season was spectacular,” Sinnott said. “Each week the girls showed up, practiced with the determination to improve – and it was evident. Five girls have earned spots in the upcoming invitational and state meets. I am excited to get into this next level of competition and so are they.”
